Ohirume-no-muchi is an alternate name for Amaterasu, the sun deity of Japanese mythology, described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the great illuminating spirit residing in and ruling over Takamagahara, the heavenly realm. As a solar deity, her light is traditionally associated with guiding movement across land and sea, making her a figure sometimes invoked in connection with travel and safe passage. She is enshrined as the central deity at Ise Grand Shrine, one of the most important sites in Shinto worship, and is regarded as the mythical ancestress of the Japanese imperial line.
