Fujiwara no Kagekiyo was a historical warrior of the late Heian period, a member of the Taira clan renowned in legend for his fierce loyalty and martial prowess during the Genpei War. Following his defeat and later blinding, tradition holds that he lived out his days in seclusion, and popular veneration in some regions came to associate him with eyesight and healing, particularly of the eyes. This connection is rooted in folk belief and theatrical legend—preserved in Noh and Kabuki plays such as Shusse Kagekiyo—rather than in established doctrinal teaching.
