Tsukiyomi-no-mikoto is the Shinto moon deity born from Izanagi, one of three noble children alongside Amaterasu and Susanoo, formed when Izanagi washed or gazed upon his right eye. Tsukiyomi is associated with the night sky and the moon's cycles, and is honored at shrines connected to lunar and nocturnal forces, including sites linked to calendars and tides. Traditional accounts describe estrangement from Amaterasu after Tsukiyomi killed the food goddess Uke Mochi, an episode often cited to explain why sun and moon do not share the sky.
