Toyotama-hime-no-mikoto

Toyotama-hime-no-mikoto is a deity from Japanese mythology, appearing in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the daughter of the sea god Ryūjin. She wed the deity Hoori and, associated with the sea and its creatures, is said to have taken the form of a dragon or sea-serpent while giving birth to their son on land, an act witnessed by Hoori against her wishes, after which she returned to the sea. Through this myth she is linked to childbirth, the bonds of marriage, and the maritime realm, and is venerated at shrines such as Toyotamahime Shrine in association with these themes.
