Ichikishima-hime is one of the three Munakata goddesses born from Susanoo's sword in Japanese mythology, traditionally venerated at shrines such as Itsukushima and Munakata. Over time she became closely syncretized with Benzaiten, the Buddhist deity of eloquence, music, and water adapted from the Hindu goddess Saraswati, leading to shared shrines and iconography. Through this syncretism she is popularly associated with fortune and prosperity, though such attributions stem from folk devotion and later religious blending rather than her original mythological role.
