Ri Sampei, known in Korean as Yi Sam-pyeong, was a Korean potter brought to Japan in the early 17th century following the Japanese invasions of Korea, and he is traditionally credited with discovering porcelain stone in the Arita region of Hizen Province. His work is regarded as foundational to the development of Arita ware, one of Japan's most celebrated porcelain traditions. He is venerated at the Tozan Shrine in Arita, where he is honored as the father of Japanese porcelain craftsmanship.
