Fukuoka Daibutsu (Shaka Nyorai)

The Fukuoka Daibutsu is a large seated bronze statue of Shaka Nyorai, the historical Buddha Shakyamuni, housed at Tochoji Temple in Fukuoka, Japan. It stands as one of the largest wooden-seated Buddha statues in the country and is associated with memorial and afterlife rites, including a dimly lit basement passage beneath the statue meant to evoke the concept of gokuraku, or the Buddhist Pure Land. Visitors traditionally walk this dark corridor as a symbolic passage representing themes of death, rebirth, and the pursuit of enlightenment central to Buddhist teaching.
