Uwatsutsuno-o-no-kami is one of three deities known collectively as the Sumiyoshi sanjin, born from the purification rites performed by Izanagi after his journey to the underworld, as recounted in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Together with Nakatsutsuno-o and Sokotsutsuno-o, this deity is enshrined at Sumiyoshi Taisha and is traditionally venerated as a guardian of seafarers and maritime travel. Devotion to this deity has long been associated with prayers for safe passage on voyages, though such benefits are matters of tradition and faith rather than verified fact.
