Sokotsutsuno-o-no-kami is one of the three Sumiyoshi deities born from the purification rites Izanagi performed after returning from the land of the dead, as recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Emerging from the lower depths of the sea during this cleansing act, this kami is closely tied to purification and the removal of impurity or defilement. Together with Nakatsutsuno-o and Uwatsutsuno-o, this deity is venerated at Sumiyoshi shrines and is traditionally associated with the sea and with rites of exorcism and spiritual cleansing.
