Nii-no-ama, known in life as Taira no Tokiko, was a historical noblewoman of the Heian period, the widow of Taira no Kiyomori and grandmother of the child emperor Antoku. She is remembered above all for the events at the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185, where, facing the defeat of the Taira clan, she is said to have taken the young emperor into the sea with her rather than allow him to fall into enemy hands. In later tradition and local memorial worship, she is honored as a tragic, devoted figure associated with protection and sacrifice, though such veneration reflects folk reverence rather than established doctrinal status.
