Kenreimon'in, born Taira no Tokuko, was a real historical figure of the late Heian period, daughter of Taira no Kiyomori and mother of Emperor Antoku, whose birth secured the Taira clan's imperial ties. After the Taira clan's defeat at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, she survived and became a Buddhist nun, spending her remaining years in prayer and mourning at a secluded temple, an episode movingly recounted in the Heike Monogatari. While she is sometimes venerated in folk memory for her role as an imperial mother, she is a historical and literary figure rather than a formally enshrined deity of fertility or childbirth in Shinto or Buddhist tradition.
