Sokotsuwatatsumi-no-kami is a Shinto sea deity, one of three Watatsumi gods born when the deity Izanagi purified himself in the sea after returning from the underworld, as recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Associated with the depths of the ocean, this kami is traditionally venerated alongside the related Sokotsutsu-no-o and other maritime deities by seafaring and fishing communities. Worship centers largely on shrines such as Sumiyoshi Taisha and Suwa Shrine, where the Watatsumi deities are honored collectively as guardians of the sea and safe voyage.
