Ichikishima-hime-no-kami is one of the three Munakata goddesses (Munakata sanjojin) born from Susanoo's sword by Amaterasu, according to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. She is enshrined at Munakata Taisha and numerous other shrines across Japan, historically venerated by seafarers and travelers as a guardian of safe passage across sea and land routes. Through syncretism with Buddhist tradition, she has also been closely associated with Benzaiten, a deity linked to water and travel.
