Susanoo no Mikoto is a major kami in Shinto mythology, born from the storm and sea, and known as the brother of Amaterasu who was banished from heaven for his disruptive conduct before later performing acts of purification and heroism, including the slaying of the eight-headed serpent Yamata no Orochi. Through syncretic tradition, Susanoo became identified with Gozu Tenno, a deity associated with plague prevention and ritual purification, particularly venerated during festivals such as Gion Matsuri. Shrines dedicated to Susanoo and Gozu Tenno are traditionally linked with rites of exorcism and the warding off of impurity and disease, though the specific efficacy of such rites is a matter of religious belief rather than verified fact.
