Taima Mandala (Amida Pure Land)

The Taima Mandala is a revered depiction of Amida Buddha's Pure Land (Sukhavati), traditionally housed at Taima-dera temple in Nara, Japan, and dated to the Nara or early Heian period. According to tradition, it was woven or created through the devotion of Princess Chujo, illustrating the splendors of the Pure Land as described in the Contemplation Sutra to inspire faith in rebirth there. The mandala has long served as a focus for Pure Land Buddhist practice and memorial rites concerning the afterlife, reflecting hopes for salvation and reunion with Amida Buddha.
