Emperor Junnin was the 47th emperor of Japan, who reigned in the eighth century before being deposed and exiled to Awaji, where he died under suspicious circumstances. After his death, he came to be venerated as a Goryo, a vengeful or restless imperial spirit believed capable of bringing calamity if left unappeased, and was honored through ritual pacification rather than any documented association with love or relationships. Traditions linking him to romantic matters are not well attested in historical or religious sources and should be regarded with caution.
