Zao Gongen

Zao Gongen (蔵王権現) is a wrathful deity venerated in Shugendo, the Japanese mountain ascetic tradition, and is regarded as the primary manifestation revealed to the tradition's founder, En no Ozunu, atop Mount Kinpu in Yoshino. Typically depicted with a fierce, flame-wreathed countenance, upraised leg, and vajra in hand, this deity is understood as a syncretic form combining aspects of Shakyamuni, Kannon, and Miroku, embodying protective and purifying power against evil and defilement. Zao Gongen remains central to Shugendo practice and is enshrined at sites such as Kinpusen-ji, where devotees seek purification through ascetic mountain rites.
