Izanagi no Mikoto is a primordial creator deity in Japanese mythology, described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as forming the islands of Japan alongside his consort Izanami. Together they are regarded as the progenitors of many kami, and their union is often cited as an early mythic model of marriage and partnership between male and female forces. Izanagi is also known for his journey to the underworld to retrieve Izanami and for the birth of major deities, including Amaterasu, following his purification afterward.
