Amida Nyorai, known in Sanskrit as Amitabha, is the Buddha of Immeasurable Light central to Pure Land Buddhism, venerated as the presiding presence of the Western Pure Land, or Sukhavati. The Chiko Mandala is a distinctive iconographic depiction of Amida's Pure Land attributed to the Nara-period monk Chiko, portraying the paradise in vivid architectural and figural detail as an aid to devotional visualization. Within Japanese Buddhist tradition, this mandala has long been associated with practices concerning death, memorial rites, and aspiration for rebirth in the Pure Land.
