Kagutsuchi no Kami is the Shinto deity of fire, whose birth in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki is said to have mortally wounded his mother Izanami, leading to his slaying by his father Izanagi. From his death, numerous other deities are said to have emerged, and he is traditionally venerated at shrines associated with fire, including those seeking protection from fire and disaster. He remains an important figure in rites concerning the control and safety of fire in Japanese religious tradition.
