Izanami-no-Okami is a primordial creator deity in Japanese mythology, who together with her partner Izanagi is credited with birthing the islands of Japan and many of the kami who followed. According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, her union with Izanagi represents an early archetype of marriage and creative partnership between male and female forces, though her story also encompasses death, as she perished after giving birth to the fire god and became ruler of the underworld, Yomi. She is venerated at various shrines across Japan, often alongside Izanagi, and is associated with themes of union, creation, and the bonds between partners, though traditions vary in how these associations are emphasized.
