Sumiyoshi Okami (Three Sea Gods)

Sumiyoshi Okami refers to the three sea deities—Sokotsutsu-no-o, Nakatsutsu-no-o, and Uwatsutsu-no-o—born from the purification rites of Izanagi after his return from the underworld, as recounted in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. Enshrined chiefly at Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka, they are venerated as guardians of the sea, sailors, and maritime travel, and are traditionally linked to the legendary Empress Jingu's overseas expedition. Worship of these kami has long been associated with fishing communities and safe voyage, reflecting their historical role in Japan's maritime culture.
