Nakatsushimahime no Mikoto is one of the Munakata sanjoshin, the three goddesses traditionally enshrined at the Munakata Taisha in Fukuoka Prefecture, alongside Tagorihime and Tagitsuhime, born of Amaterasu according to Kojiki and Nihon Shoki accounts. She is venerated primarily as a guardian of seafaring, maritime trade, and the sea routes historically linking Japan to the Asian continent, with associations to agriculture and food arising through her broader role as a protective and providing kami. Her worship reflects the ancient Munakata clan's maritime heritage and continues at shrines dedicated to the three sisters collectively.
