崇道天皇(早良親王)
Prince Sawara, posthumously honored as Emperor Sudō, was an eighth-century imperial prince, brother of Emperor Kanmu, who died in exile after being implicated in the assassination of a court official. Following his death, a series of calamities and misfortunes befell the court, which were widely attributed to his vengeful spirit, prompting rites of pacification and purification to appease him. He is remembered in Japanese religious tradition as one of the most prominent onryō, or vengeful spirits, whose story shaped later practices of spiritual purification and exorcism intended to calm restless souls.
