Kumano Gongen refers to the syncretic deities enshrined at the Kumano Sanzan shrines in Wakayama Prefecture, where the primordial goddess Izanami is venerated as the principal kami, often identified with Ketsumiko-no-Okami. Within the honji suijaku tradition, Izanami at Kumano was associated with Amida Buddha and the western Pure Land, reflecting beliefs in purification, death, and renewal that shaped the site's role as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual restoration.
