Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto is one of the three Munakata goddesses (Munakata Sanjojin) born from the offspring deities of Amaterasu and Susanoo, as recounted in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. She is enshrined at Munakata Taisha and numerous other shrines across Japan, and has long been venerated as a guardian of sea voyages and maritime safety. Through syncretic association with the Buddhist deity Benzaiten, she is also widely regarded as a protective figure connected to water, and shrines dedicated to her are often approached with prayers for safety and protection.
