Ichikishimahime is one of the three Munakata goddesses in Japanese mythology, daughters born from Susanoo, and she is revered as a deity of the sea and of safe passage for voyages. Through syncretic tradition, she became closely identified with Benzaiten, the Buddhist deity of eloquence, music, water, and wealth, whose worship spread widely across Japan through shrines and temples often situated near water.
