Benzaiten, also known as Daibenzaiten, is a deity of Buddhist origin derived from the Hindu goddess Saraswati, and is venerated in Japan as one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin). She is traditionally associated with eloquence, music, knowledge, and the arts, and is often depicted near water, playing a biwa (a Japanese lute). Over time she has also become linked with wealth and fortune, and is worshipped at numerous shrines throughout Japan, including notable sites on islands and near bodies of water such as Enoshima and Chikubushima.
