Binzuru Sonja, identified with Pindola Bharadvaja, one of the sixteen arhats said to have been direct disciples of the Buddha, is venerated in Japanese Buddhist tradition as a figure associated with healing. Statues of him are commonly placed at the entrance of temples, and visitors traditionally touch or rub the statue, often at the location corresponding to their own ailment, in hopes of relief.
