Izanami-no-mikoto

Izanami-no-mikoto is a primordial creator deity in Japanese mythology who, together with her consort Izanagi, is credited in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki with birthing the Japanese islands and many kami, including deities associated with elements of the natural and agricultural world. She died giving birth to the fire god Kagutsuchi and thereafter became associated with the underworld (Yomi), where tradition holds she continues to preside over death while remaining linked to themes of creation, fertility, and generative union. Her mythic partnership with Izanagi is often cited as an early model of marital and procreative bonds in Japanese religious thought, though later folk devotion has attached various local beliefs to her name that are not part of the earliest textual accounts.
