Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto is one of the three Munakata goddesses born from Susanoo's sword in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, deities associated with the sea, safe voyages, and guardianship of the Munakata region. Through syncretism with the Buddhist deity Benzaiten, she came to be venerated at numerous shrines, particularly those on or near water, and is popularly linked to the arts, music, and feminine beauty. Devotion to her is documented across many shrines in Japan, including sites such as Itsukushima and Enoshima.
