General Nogi Maresuke (1849–1912) was a Japanese army general renowned for commanding Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War, most notably at the Siege of Port Arthur. Following the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912, Nogi and his wife committed ritual suicide, an act that cemented his reputation for loyalty and self-sacrifice and led to his veneration as a symbol of duty; he is enshrined at Nogi Shrine in Tokyo. Some visitors associate him with victory and perseverance given his military record, though this connection reflects popular veneration rather than a formally defined religious portfolio.
