Benzaiten, also known as Benten, is a deity of Japanese Buddhism whose origins trace to the Hindu goddess Saraswati, and she is traditionally associated with water, music, eloquence, and the arts. At Zeniarai Benten Shrine in Kamakura, near Tokyo, she is venerated within a folk tradition in which visitors wash coins in the shrine's spring water, a practice popularly linked to hopes for financial prosperity. She is also counted among the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan, a group widely honored in association with good fortune, though such benefits reflect popular belief rather than doctrinal guarantee.
