Jingu Kogo (Empress Jingu)

Jingu Kogo, also known as Empress Jingu, is a legendary figure from early Japanese history and mythology, traditionally credited with leading a military expedition to Korea while regent for her son, later venerated as Emperor Ojin. She is closely associated with the sea, as accounts describe her voyages across the waters and the calming of tides through divine favor, linking her to maritime travel and fishing communities. Over time she has also come to be honored in connection with wisdom, learning, and safe childbirth, reflecting her role as both a warrior-leader and a maternal, guiding figure in shrine traditions.
