市杵島比売命(弁財天)
Ichikishimahime no Mikoto is one of the three Munakata goddesses born from the sword of Susanoo in Japanese mythology, traditionally venerated at Munakata Taisha and Itsukushima Shrine as a guardian of seas and safe passage. Over time this deity became syncretized with Benzaiten, the Buddhist goddess of music, eloquence, wealth, and water, imported from the Indian deity Saraswati. Through this syncretism, shrines dedicated to Ichikishimahime/Benzaiten are often associated with water sources and are sometimes visited by those seeking wellbeing, though such practices reflect folk devotion rather than doctrinal claims.
