Izanami no Mikoto is a primordial creator deity in Japanese mythology, described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki as the female counterpart to Izanagi no Mikoto, together bringing forth the islands of Japan and many other kami. After dying in childbirth, she descended to Yomi, the land of the dead, becoming associated with death and the underworld in traditional accounts. Some shrines and traditions honor her in connection with protection and safety, though such associations reflect devotional practice rather than a single fixed doctrine.
