Tokugawa Mitsukuni, popularly known as Mito Komon, was a 17th-century daimyo of the Mito domain and grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu, remembered as a scholarly and reform-minded ruler. He is best known for sponsoring the compilation of the Dai Nihon-shi, a massive historical chronicle of Japan, an undertaking that established Mito as a center of Confucian and historical scholarship. Later folklore and popular drama transformed him into a legendary wandering judge figure associated with wisdom, justice, and learning, though this image is largely a product of Edo-period and later storytelling rather than strict historical record.
