Takemikazuchi-no-okami is a deity from Japanese mythology recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, associated with thunder, swordsmanship, and martial valor. He is best known for his role in subjugating the land of Izumo on behalf of the heavenly deities and for his legendary contest of strength with Takeminakata, an episode often cited as an origin for sumo wrestling. He is enshrined at Kashima Jingu in Ibaraki Prefecture, where he is venerated as a guardian of warriors, and by extension is honored by some today in connection with victory and athletic endeavor.
