Kokuzo Bosatsu

Kokuzo Bosatsu (Ākāśagarbha), whose name translates roughly as "Space Treasury Bodhisattva," is a figure in Japanese Buddhism associated with boundless wisdom, memory, and vast, sky-like virtue. This bodhisattva is especially connected to the Kokuzo Gumonji Ho, an esoteric practice historically undertaken to cultivate learning and retentive memory, which has led practitioners to regard Kokuzo Bosatsu as a focus of devotion for scholarly pursuits. Kokuzo Bosatsu is venerated at various temples across Japan, often depicted holding a jewel or lotus symbolizing the inexhaustible treasury of merit and knowledge attributed to this figure in Buddhist tradition.
