Tsukuyomi no Mikoto is the moon deity of Japanese mythology, born from Izanagi and given dominion over the night, as recorded in the Kojiki and Nihon Shogi. Tsukuyomi's separation from the sun deity Amaterasu, often linked to an act of violence against the food deity Uke Mochi, is traditionally cited as the mythic origin of day and night existing apart.
